Hundreds of bettors were taken into custody in a raid in a cockpit of Mandaue City. They plead guilty to illegal gambling in the regional trial court and were subsequently released after three days in prison and a P1500 fine.
If luck is a possibility in such a situation, the arrested bettors did not have to pay for their violation because for some reason they served five days.
In addition, a number of employees were also arrested and 15 plead not guilty. Thus, they were detained pending their own day in court and the setting of bail.
Of those released, one bettor exclaimed his happiness at being able to go home. However, he was sorry that he got fired from a motorcycle distributor company, where he held the job as a collector.
Illegal betting, like gambling on cockfighting, is no joke in the Philippines. Diehards will have to work hard to give it up.
