Poker players usually have the option of re-entering poker tournaments today in a way that even a decade ago was a very rare thing. Whereas there were rebuy or re-entry occasions, they were not everywhere. Obviously, these days, re-entry tournaments are the norm, so a tournament series committed to freezeouts appears revolutionary.
The 888Poker Freezeout Series runs from June 21 to June 29 and includes 24 events in total. The total guarantees across these events amounted to $665,000, which compared to some event series lined up for this summer, is on the lower side.
However, with no re-entries, players will have the opportunity to play knowing that when they catch someone, they’ll not be returning to the same event.
Just how popular freezeout events are with players could be gauged precisely by the turnout, with buy-ins ranging from just around $5.50 to $109, with Day 1 entries for the $200,000-guaranteed Main Event costing $109.
The Main Event provides the opportunity to enter several flights, slightly bending the rules of a complete freezeout in that regard, though there are many other events without that option.
With various formats like 6-Max, 8-Max and full ring, there is something for everyone, with PKO’s (Progressive Knock Out events) going on too. Most events are simple NLHE freezeouts, though.
The validity of the freezeout has been debated for several years, with players of various levels appraising the format in various ways. Daniel Negreanu joked with the idea of playing a whole World Series without rebuying or re-entering, suggesting that the freezeout format is the only genuine poker format.
With 888Poker’s latest tournament festival, we will find out exactly how popular the conventional version of playing no limit hold’em truly is.
