Advertising Standards Authority Objects to Betfred Advert’s Bingo ad

Betfred’s recent bingo ad apparently rubbed many the wrong way. The ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) had to step in after numerous complains.

The offensive ad showed a woman bathing while another was exercising. A man was also present in the midst of cooking. The point was that they were all playing online bingo on their phones. Pretty shocking stuff!

TV viewers were offended by the idea of gambling during one’s on-going daily routine. They felt the ad normalized gambling and as such, it bordered on the irresponsible.

Of course Betfred had something to say in its defense,

“The ad focused on how people could gamble using Betfred bingo while also undertaking tasks or leisure activities around the house. Gambling was therefore not portrayed as taking priority over those tasks or as indispensable.”

The ASA did not agree and felt that the ad condoned and even encouraged gambling in an irresponsible way. From some perspectives, it may seem that online betting is an indispensable priority in life.

Betfred continues to fight for its position. Betting in the ad was one amongst many activities shown. They insist that gambling is part of leisure time and bingo is a great option. Excuses, excuses….
