The Eagles’ start had been promising this season but their recent defeat by Spurs may affect their position in the league. If we are wondering what changed, we should probably take a look at what Paul Merson has to say. As a former Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Arsenal player, he is best placed to give an opinion or two on what is cooking at Crystal Palace.
According to the pundit, Palace is facing defeat majorly because of two lads; Benteke and Zaha. For Wilfried Zaha, his game has gone down since his failed transfer to Arsenal. The player could be feeling frustrated hence his poor performance.
Failing to net a single goal this season is a dip in the player’s game as he had scored 10 goals with 5 assists the previous season. Merson also believes that Zaha does all the work for the Eagles.
Benteke is another Palace player whose performance is falling by the day. Following injury and the emergence of Ayew, he has been off the pitch for two seasons. In all 91 games Benteke has played for Crystal Palace, he has only scored 21 goals. This is highly unacceptable from a player who has ever netted 42 league goals in 2012 while at Aston Villa.
Roy Hodgson has some serious pep talking to do for these power players ahead of their game against the Wolves. If he fails to do so, he shouldn’t expect anything different from what went down at Spurs.
