Former professional footballer and current television pundit Paul Merson admitted he had a relapse in his gambling addiction recovery in an ITV documentary.
In Harry’s Heroes: The Full English, Merson tearfully admitted that gambling had ruined his life. Merson had previously discussed his addiction struggles with gambling, drugs, and alcohol.
In the show, Merson said,
“I’m struggling with life at the moment. Gambling. I’ve lost control completely again. I’m digging a hole – I can’t get out of it.”
In his playing career, Merson played 327 league games for Arsenal, and he became a fan favorite during his time at the Emirates. He also played 21 times internationally for England, and since hanging up his boots has made a successful career as a media personality.
Merson tweeted out thanking his fans for their support,
“Thank you for the supportive tweets, means the world to me.”
Merson also struggled with alcohol in the past, and he pleaded guilty to a DUI in 2012.
He also added,
“Addiction is the most lonely of places and I’ve had three of the worst types over three decades. Never be afraid to talk, you’re never alone.
