Bangladesh High Court Rules Gambling Illegal

Bangladesh’s high court has declared that gambling is illegal in 13 different clubs as well as in other parts of the country. Justices Md Mahmud Hassan Talukder and Sheikh Hassan Arif delivered this verdict and they disposed of a ruling delivered in the same regard.
Affected clubs include Uttara, Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Dhaka, Officers’ Club, Banani, Dhaka Ladies’ Club, Chittagong, Cadet College Club, Chittagong Seniors’ Club, Sylhet, Narayanganj as well as Khulna Club.

Four years ago, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court lawyers filed a motion seeking the High Court to bar gambling activities in the 13 clubs. In the petition, they stated that any form of gambling in these establishment is illegal. However, the clubs continue to arrange gambling for their members, and even went on to post related content on their web pages.

In 2019, around September, the government launched a crackdown on these establishments and on gambling in general across the country. For close to two month, the government performed nearly 50 raids and made more than 300 arrests connected to illegal gambling.
