Burnley got their season off to a perfect start by thrashing Southampton 3-0 at Turf Moor, courtesy of Ashley Barnes brace and Gudmundsson’s solo goal.
The game took a while to get going, but the hosts finally got the breakthrough just after the hour-mark. Jannik Vestergaard’s defensive mistake proved costly as it allowed Barnes to go through on goal to put the Clarets ahead.
The striker doubled the advantage in the 70th minute as he converted Erik Pieters’ deep cross from the left, before Gudmundsson added the icing on the cake, curling the ball into the far corner after a superb solo run.
The Saints faded in the second half and the closest they came to scoring was towards stoppage time, when Nick Pope denied Vestergaard from close range following a goalmouth scramble.
Southampton will be looking to bounce back next week when they entertain Liverpool, while Burnley will be away at Arsenal.
