Finally, Cleveland Cavaliers released the shooting guard JR Smith on Monday. For months, the Cavs had been trying to trade Smith. But the team could not find the right deal even after extending his stay from June 30th to 15th July.
If the Cavaliers release Smith, they will open salary-cap space and will move under the luxury tax. Smith who is 33 years old, played just eleven games last season. He didn’t feel comfortable with his role in the Cavaliers. He then stopped playing in the hope of being traded or released.
When Smith clears the waiver, he will becomes a free agent. He will sign wherever he wants. Cleveland acquired Smith from New York Knicks in 2015 through a trade. He was equally loved and hated by Cavs fans who never knew what he was capable of doing.
He is one of NBA most accurate 3-point shooter. He played an essential role in Cleveland winning the 2016 championship. He helped Cavs comeback from a 3-1 deficit to dethrone the Golden State Warriors. This ended Cavaliers 52 year’s title drought.
Smith knows that some fans are not happy with his decision, but some will appreciate his nuttiness. To him, Cleveland will always be unique. He hopes to be picked by another team if not so, he said he has no regrets.
