Epic Games battle royale sensation Fortnite has hit another revenue milestone. A report from Nielsen’s Superdata suggested that the game has made $2.4 billion in 2018. This is the first ever time that such a revenue data is being seen for Fortnite for an entire year. Superdata claimed that Fortnite is the highest selling game of 2018 in addition to the highest earning free-to-play title, after eclipsing the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. But it is important to note that Epic Games itself didn’t release any revenue details regarding any of its games, apart from Fortnite.
It is also important to note that Fortnite has been available on every platform, i.e Android, iOS, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. This ensures that it has a higher chance of monetization in comparison to other titles. But it is apparently lower than the alleged $3 billion in profit alone which was reported earlier in the month.
The report read– “Free-to-play titles amassed 80 percent of digital games revenue in 2018 but premium games have still performed well in Western markets. Asian mobile games have helped the region earn 62 percent of global free-to-play revenue, whereas North America and Europe have generated 80 percent of premium games revenue.“
Superdata called out Red Dead Redemption 2’s sales figures and stated that they stood out to make more all thanks to Red Dead Online.
SuperData said- “Red Dead Redemption 2 earned $516M in Q4, and this has helped it to grow premium games revenue 10 percent year-over-year. The title is expected to continue adding to the market in 2019 with the help of a further monetisation of its multiplayer mode, Red Dead Online.”
Prior to this, the analytics firm Sensor Tower also claimed that Fortnite on Android and iOS had been trumped by NetEase’s Knives Out.
Sensor Tower stated that Knives Out has grossed $465 million worldwide whereas Fortnite had grossed $455 million. In addition to this, it had eclipsed PUBG Mobile’s earnings as well due to its ability to monetize in China, which is something PUBG Mobile hasn’t been able to do due to local regulations. Oddly, the report didn’t include Android Fortnite earnings which are unknown currently. Only figures of iOS have been considered. A majority of Knives Out’s earnings come from Japan, and it is about 80 percent, says Sensor Tower estimates.
Knives Out’s success can be attributed to markets such as Japan and China, which has been claimed by Sensor Tower as their second largest market, the report didn’t really give a complete picture of the battle royale space on mobile. The reason being that Epic Games’ earnings on Android are unknown at this point in time with the aforementioned $455 million figure which is the iOS revenue alone. Given Fortnite’s cross-platform nature, it is unclear whether or not players are making in-app purchases on one platform, like PC or console, but spending a majority of their in-game time on another mobile or vice-versa.
