With the coronavirus spike re-registering across the country, many casinos in the United States have had to re-close their doors or adopt extreme sanitary measures and operate with serious difficulties.
During last summer when the restrictions were relaxed, it was believed that the pandemic was under control and that little by little the situation would normalize. But now the new pandemic wave that is sweeping through the country has forced the closure of most commercial establishments once again.
To avoid shutting down completely in several states, gambling dens have had to drastically reduce their hours of operation. But in the case of Michigan that decided to close the casinos and other gambling venues in Detroit, it seems to be inevitable in other states. Another state that is closing its casinos this week is Illinois.
The latest covid-19 update in Illinois has reported 12,601 new confirmed daily cases, the number of which has remained in the last 12 days. In the state alone, around 600,000 cases have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic. With the increase in cases again, Governor JB Pritzker decided to order the closures and other measures.
The casinos, as well as the closed sports fields and gaming centers, will be closed for two weeks from this friday. At the end of this quarantine period, the situation will be evaluated to determine whether the measures are extended or lifted.
For now, meetings in closed places are prohibited: party and meeting rooms, country clubs and others. This happens just before Thanksgiving on november 26.
If the state registers positive changes of less than 12% of covid-19 cases for three days in a row, after the next two weeks, then the measures could be lifted.
In the same way, hospitalizations for coronavirus during seven of the ten previous days should also stabilize. In the intensive care units of hospitals there must be at least 20% availability of beds, as well as in the rest of the hospitalization areas for three consecutive days. If there are no variations in these three prerequisites, the measurements will be kept.
According to Pritzker forecasts, the chances of the closure reversing soon are very low.
The governor stated Wednesday that:
“We will continue to see an increase in both hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 over the next several weeks due to infections that have already occurred. But we can change our outcome in the long term.”
“We can potentially save thousands of lives in the coming months if we make changes right now to stop this in its tracks,” he added.
Casinos are not expected to be a source of spread of COVID-19 infections. However, statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health indicate that 23 people who were diagnosed with the virus admitted to having visited a casino in the previous two weeks of having tested positive.
Of course, in the analysis of this figure based on the last 30 days that ended last friday, around 2,000 people said they had also visited retail stores, schools, bars, restaurants and hospitals before being diagnosed with covid-19.
The sample of 2000 people was for each of the categories analyzed, not together. So casinos then rank at box 41 on the list of places where people are most likely to get the coronavirus.
