Loot boxes are under attack by the Swedish Consumer Protection Authority. It is part of their purview to investigate them with the help of the National Public Health Department. They are working in tandem with the gambling regular and media council.
General research on loot boxes will help future policy and it is not directed at one operator or brand. The Consumer Protection Authority wants to address claims about them as gambling activities, just like casino and sports betting. Apparently there is plenty of evidence. Now it must be verified.
The future of loot boxes is at stake. They will have to be “declassified” on the basis that video games do not allow cashing out and rewards generated have no monetary value.
