Online Casino operators from Cambodia suffered a blow after police had to rescue a Thai woman for behind held captive by four Malaysian casino operators.
The Bernama news agency of Malaysia reported that Cambodian police detained four Malaysian nationals who had been suspected of holding a 24-year-old women hostage. Police started taking action after the woman’s husband complained to Police.
The woman reportedly worked at a casino which was run by the men. They believed that she laundered money. The woman was captured and they threatened to cut off her figures if the money was not returned.
Thai authorities contacted Police from Thailand who tracked the kidnappers to the online casino’s head office in Phnom Penh. The woman was caught and released to Thai authorities and the men remain under house arrest in Cambodia.
There has been a rise in the number of Sihanoukville based gambling operations both land based and online recently. Cambodia’s government has however announced in August that it will not issue new gambling licenses and that existing ones would not be renewed once they expire.
Many Cambodian online gambling operations were focused on mainland Chinese customers and news of the government’s licensing decision meant that a flurry of Chinese nationals took place.
