Referee Andre Mariner will be the Premier League’s first video assistant referee (VAR) following the announcement of officials for the first match between Liverpool and Norwich.
Michael Oliver will be in charge of Friday night’s Premier League opener between Liverpool and Norwich, with Andre Mariner announced the VAR referee in this clash.
Last November, Premier League sides voted to introduce VAR this season to review goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity.
There will be in-stadium referees that will be able to review decisions through a television screen on the touchline, however, every referee will still be supported by another team of VAR assistants located at Stockley Park, the Premier League’s referees’ base.
In addition, graphics will be shown to explain when the official is reviewing a decision and where possible, video clips will be shown to elaborate the reasons behind a decision being made.
