SL Benfica, Major Portuguese sports club, now accepts crypto to purchase tickets and merchandise, as reported by the Verdict on the 6th of June.
As stated by the report, SL Benfica worked together with Utrust, a cryptocurrency service to offer the new option for payments. Customers and fans can now buy products and tickets on the club’s website with UTK the native token of Utrust or with major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
Utrust supposedly supports instant cryptocurrency to fiat conversions, which is a huge advantage for SL Benfica as they can easily convert their revenue directly to cash. The press release further explains that this permits the football club to avoid problems surrounding the volatility of several cryptocurrencies. At the same time, they’re taking advantage of the benefits of the Blockchain technology by using it to conduct secure transactions.
SL Benfica seemingly has about seven million fans that are active on various social media channels, and their real fans worldwide should be double that figure. Benfica says its primary aim is to grow its fan base further with its new cryptocurrency payments option. They’ve even started hyping the new payment options to their fans as they say it’s the safest, cheapest, and fastest method for online transactions.
SL Benfica’s CEO, Domingos Soares de Oliveira remarked on the substantial digital fan base, saying:
“We recognise that many of our supporters are now digital users first, so we want to be ahead of the curve when it comes to adopting novel technologies and giving our supporters the best online experience.”
As reported by Cointelegraph previously, West Ham United, a Premier League football team, has partnered with Socios.com a Blockchain platform to create a “token ecosystem for fans.” The fan tokens as it is called, will be used to buoy up spectator engagement through polls based on tokens, games, and rewards. They also stated that numerous merchandise will be offered on the Socios platform.
