Odhran Doherty (23) is the newest millionaire in Ireland courtesy of a Lotto Plus 1 ticket his dad Liam gifted him.
The two are very close and work together on the family farm at The Glebe in Letterkenny, County Donegal.
They never expected their numbers to come up but Odhran was shocked on Saturday evening when he checked his ticket and realized he had bagged the massive amount of money.
Dad Liam said he had bought three lottery tickets in the shop, one for himself and two others for his wife Margaret and Odhran.
That same evening, Odhran was on his way to a party in the local Dry Arch bar at Bonagee and popped into the adjacent shop to check his ticket.
Speaking particularly to Donegal Daily, Liam said, “He rang me and said the ticket had said he was a winner. He checked with the guy in the shop but they said it was too big for them to tell him how much he had won.
“He told me I had better come out. I thought it was an early April’s Fool joke or something. When I got out to him he came out of the party with his hands above his head and said he was a millionaire.
“I took the ticket off him for safe-keeping and we realised later there was only one winner of the €1 million.”
Odhran’s mum Margaret said that the family has been on cloud nine since learning they hit the jackpot.
“He simply couldn’t believe it at first but it soon sunk in and he was just so delighted. I have a pain in my neck from all the hugs he has given me,” said Margaret.
“He’s a lovely big young fella and this will set him up now for life. We’re just so delighted for him.”
Asked about what they are planning to do with the money, she commented,
“We won’t let it go to his head. We’ll sit down as a family and we have two solicitors in the family so he won’t be short on advice.”
Odhran is the youngest in his family.
His eldest brother Shane is a pharmacist and owns a pharmacy in Manchester, while sister Lana is a solicitor with a practice in Gorey, Co. Wexford.
After putting the ticket in a secure place, Odhran decided to phone Bartley’s shop in Raphoe where his father had purchased the lotto ticket.
He spoke with the owner James Bartley and asked him if he knew who the owner of the winning ticket was.
Mr. Bartley replied he had heard some rumors but didn’t know who exactly had won the jackpot.
Mum Margaret said,
“That’s when Odhran stuck out his hand and told James Bartley that he was speaking with the winner. It sounds so funny but that would be Odhran alright.”
An Alumni of St. Eunans College in Letterkenny, Odhran is largely into farm machinery and a new vehicle could become a priority with his new riches.
Odhran became the latest addition to the list of big National Lottery winners that Raphoe town has produced since the start of 2019.
In particular, Barclay’s Newsagents in Raphoe is on a winning streak, having sold a €500,000 winning ticket to a local man Charlie Meehan in February.
Another lucky shop in town is the Centra store, which sold the winning Match 5 Plus Bonus winning ticket from the lotto draw on February 28th, earning the ticket holder a cool €98,068.
23-year old Odhran’s winning numbers were 8, 11, 16, 18, 20, 46, and bonus number 40.
