Sportsbet may be the Australian betting giant, but it makes mistakes. Now it must pay up. Millions are at stake for an odds mix-up.
Bets were cancelled due to odds “errors” and the local gambling regular is demanding the entity to honor all wages made on the Australian Football League (AFL) games in May.
No matter that Sportsbet is claiming the odds given were errors.
Here is what happened: Sportsbet accepted bets that no player would make 40 or more disposals in round-10 AFL matches.
Despite this good news, it then cancelled all bets. Punters were forced to believe that this was within Sportsbet’s rights. Apparently not!
The Northern Territory Racing Commission (NTRC) has another view on the problem after careful investigation.
The ruling states that while the odds were certainly offered in error, the mistake was not clear to customers, even those with a reasonable knowledge of betting and of the sport of AFL.
The final determination of the NTRC was that Sportsbet would have to pay in the realm of AUS$9m according to media sources.
At Sportsbet, a spokesman declared,
“We acknowledge the NT Commission’s determination today and we will be topping up the accounts of the affected customers as soon as possible.”
