During this coronavirus crisis, the Federal Government of Nigeria has guaranteed the sports betting operators that it will ensure that they do not get any undue hindrances. In order to make the gambling remain viable, the government said it would not hesitate to give necessary approvals for any form of palliative.

Director-General of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, NLRC, Lanre Gbajabiamila, while speaking in a video conference meeting with the Sports Betting Permit holders across Nigeria, promised that the Federal Government would do all it takes to make sure the Sports Betting sub-sector of the Nigerian Gaming industry is not affected at this pandemic period. Lanre Gbajabiamila also stated that the meeting became necessary not only to ensure close contact with the operators but also to x-ray their operational challenges in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lanre Gbajabiamila also said they feel obliged to touch base with operators, find out the challenges they are facing in their business and see how they can continue to work together, despite the difficulties occasioned by this ugly pandemic. He assured everyone that the government will do the best they can to protect every business within the industry, and cannot fold their arms and watch their industry with the huge investment therein go down the drain.

Gbajabiamila said to the operators that he was optimistic that the Federal Government would not hesitate to give necessary approvals for any form of palliative that will ensure their business remains viable because there is a very peculiar industry which, if properly harnessed, and would adequately shore up the much-needed revenue for the government. He also said the operators should ensure that they all play by the rule, while the government does all it takes to give needed support for all businesses to remain viable.
