Weta digital is partnering with Amazon Web Services to aids its efforts to develop visual effects output and processes. To start with, the firm plans to use AWS cloud to create cloud-based visual effects.
The new work flow will include new technologies for the visual effects that will underpin its expansion across the globe. The company expects that this will accelerate important segments of film production, and also expand its operations in New Zealand, allowing its artists to work together remotely.
Over the last 25 years, the company has been involved in a number of significant characters and worlds in movies, including the Middle-earth as well as Gollum in the film The Lord of the Rings trilogy together with the landscape in Avatar.
Under the terms of this deal, the company will shift a majority of its IT infrastructure to AWS in support of a system that runs over 100 tools, including an LED-stage production services that can generate immersive new worlds right onset.
In addition, the firm intends to use AWS to render and produce original material from their newly rolled out Weta Animated to deliver on its movie slate.
By exploiting AWS’ global systems, services, including its storage, compute, machine learning, security, and analytics, Weta will be able to spread out its workload, which will free up some of its talent to work on visual effects, and rendering remotely from wherever its workforce happens to be stationed.
Prem Akkaraju, the CEO at Weta Digital, stated that they have been innovating for the last 10 years. He added that by adopting Amazon Web service’s infrastructure, they would be able to run a proprietary pipeline on also scale their production a greater height than before.
