Betsafe, a brand of Betsson, has agreed to a three-year sponsorship with Kenyan football clubs for the Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. Both of the football clubs have been suffering poorly after the previous sponsor, Sportpesa withdrew.
As of now, Betsafe does not have a presence in Kenya. Betsson’s Kenyan subsidiary Bet High Kenya’s Public Relations and partner manager, Tom Bwana, however, confirmed that Betsafe has plans to enter the Kenyan market. He confirmed that Betsafe is set to enter the Kenyan market very soon and their top priority would be the Kenyan Football. He also ensured that Betsafe would like to engage with the fans of both the clubs.
Both the clubs were previously sponsored by Sportpesa and now Betsafe would be the main shirt sponsor for them. Sportspesa canceled all the sponsorship agreements in August 2019. The decision came after the Kenyan authorities ordered telecom companies to block the payments to Sportpesa due to tax disputes.
However, things got escalated and further tax on stakes was implemented and the Sportpesa withdrew from the Kenyan market. The operator has not returned since then. In November, a court ruling however determined that the initial controversial tax should be levied on the player’s winnings and not on operators.
Both of the teams have suffered since Sportpesa left the sponsorship. The clubs have asked for funds as they could not pay wages to the players on time.
Ambrose Rachier, Chairman of Gor Mahia has expressed pleasure in finding a reliable sponsor. He believes that it is required to get long-term financial support. Gor Mahia has won Kenyan Premier League for record 18 times including 2017,2018 and 2019.
Dr. Dan Shikanda, Chairman of AFC Leopards said that the new sponsorship deal would help to ensure the financial security of the club. He said that they are proud to announce the deal for the fans. He further commented that this sponsorship means everything to them. He explained that this would give them financial security and they can focus on becoming the best club in Kenya. AFC Leopards has won Kenyan Premier League for 13 record times.
