Martijn Peters, the CEO of the distinguished British software developer, Platipus Gaming, spoke to Slotegrator about his company and its products, how they create their slots and where do they get the ideas from, and how they attract new players, while keeping the existing ones. With their HTML5 slots tailored to the preferences of players, the company has seen a remarkable success ever since it was founded in 2014.
The initial idea comes from the market or regional trends
Even though Platipus has recently begun to venture into other areas of gaming, such as Blackjack and Baccarat, its main focus has always been slots. With the myriads of slot games that are being offered in the market nowadays, it is important for every new product to be created in such a way as to appeal to players and make them choose specifically this one over others.
The developer has good experience making such titles as up to date they have released well over 100 slot and casino games with various themes and various features, and continue to launch 2 new ones every month, where most other suppliers generally come with 1 new game every month. Lately, the company has been focusing on the Asian market, which has been showing a rapid growth, but their portfolio includes a wide range of topics, including ancient mythology, fairy tales, or exotic animals.
The CEO has shared a few insights on how their slots are produced, describing the stages of slot creation:
“It starts with a game idea and theme, defining the game features and from there the artwork and matching sound creation. After assembling the game, there is a lot of QA, and finally, the slot is moved to production.”
He revealed that Platipus often looks for inspiration in the current market, seeing what themes enjoy the greatest popularity, or to the specific markets in certain regions, where some topics may be better liked than others. Generally, they try to infuse their offering with both classic elements and new trends, so that the player recognizes the familiarity of the game, while his curiosity is aroused by innovative features.
Peters also mentioned that he believes HTML5 is the best format to use, as it allows players to play on any device. As a recipe for success with both beginners and weathered high rollers, he stated the company relies on
“math which combines the involvement of the player all the time in the game and substantial wins with high volatility.”
The key is to make the product appealing to a new player
The product may be state-of-the-art but it will be no use without players to play it. To encourage them to do just that, Platipus equips its games with bonus spins, attractive themes and designs that will be well-liked by mainstream audience. The developer also provides their operating partners with marketing materials and a short intro for every title.
When asked what a slot needs to have to make players choose it over all the others, Peters quoted “outstanding math, features, and art.” A combination of both new features and existing ones, whose popularity has been proved, is the best way to go.
Voicing his own opinion on slots
In Platipus CEO’s view, slots became so popular because of the desire of the player to reach the bonus game, knowing that any moment could bring them a massive win. The most favourite ones seem to be those with classic themes involving ancient kingdoms, wild animals and sea creatures. And even though a catchy title may certainly help the game attract attention, it is not a vital part of the product. His personal favourite is apparently Jade Valley, a 50-payline game, featuring growing wild, re-spins, and four different jackpots.
Platipus then, now and after
The developer’s offering and features have, of course, been changing over the years. As crucial part of becoming successful and staying ahead of the competition is to keep up with the latest trends and newest developments in the constantly changing market, the products have to follow its lead, while maintaining focus on player satisfaction and loyalty. This can be achieved through ongoing evolution and continuously delivering high quality. The significance of these factors is even multiplied considering the ever-growing number of providers entering the gambling scene.
Up until now, Platipus has focused mainly on slots, which Peters explained as follows:
“Slots are in our genes: the whole Platipus team has breathed slots for decades. This is what most of the Platipus staff have played and developed and therefore it was an easy choice to start building slots according to what WE believed players would love and enjoy.”
However, he added that they have recently added table games, including Blackjack and Baccarat, and are planning to launch European and American roulette by the end of the year.
And what does the future hold for the British slot developer?
“Platipus will continue to produce revolutionary and challenging products by researching markets and trends,” declared Martijn Peters. “There will be a focus on global diversification in order to satisfy players according to their region with customized slots to fulfil local needs and habits.”
