A new bill is paving the way for legal gambling to be re-introduced in Ukraine. The bill is to be tabled in Ukrainian parliament and when passed, it will make slot machines to be introduced in three, four and five star hotels.
According to the Ukrainian government, the bill will reduce the number of gambling operators. Gaming equipment regulation will also be introduced and a compulsory verification system to be administered by the government tax office. Other things required by the bill include certification of gambling equipment, and an increase of penalties for running unlicensed gambling. The taxes collected from gambling is expected to be used in sports medicine and culture.
The passing of the bill is expected to eliminate illegal gambling and also limit the spread of gambling. The legislation will also boost the budget by up to $154.7 million, but the final figures might be higher than that depending on the version of the law that the parliament will pass.
President Volodymyr approved the gambling bill in September and agreed that it could improve tourism in the country. Hotels in Kyiv wishing to apply for a license are required to have at least 200 rooms. In other towns, a minimum of 150 rooms is needed.
In 2009, all gambling became illegal in Ukraine with exception of state run gambling after nine people were killed at a slot parlor in Dnipropetrovsk. However, the country is now looking forward to re-introducing legal gambling. The new bill will establish the foundation of regulated gambling activities in the country.
