Puerto Rico is an independent territory of the United States. Recently the Betting Commission Act of the Government of Puerto Rico contracted in which they are expected to generate much- needed profits for the ailing island which was shaken by Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and perhaps equally damaged by the negligence of financial aid and other resources which the territory received in aftermath of the storm, according to the New York Times. The purpose of legalization is to attract more tourists and benefit from additional tax revenue.
Rep. Nestor Alonso said:
“We continue to work for tourism, which will help us improve economic development for the island,”
All casinos, racetracks and off-track gambling establishments on the US region would be allowed to offer sports betting. However there will be a different tax policy which includes a 7% tax on gross gaming revenue for retail sportsbooks and 12 % for online sports betting.
Rosselló further added:
“This victory is part of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Video Games Affairs. The island will be able to bighead as a national treasure and international spot for sports betting”.
