Plans are taking place for building a zero-carbon Bitcoin mining facility in Salem township. But the supervisors are having more interest in dollars. This bitcoin mining facility is not similar to any other industries which are coming to this town. Most of the jobs related to it will be done by computers.
Things got a little bit heard during the meeting that took place at the administration building on Tuesday. The supervisors have already weighed the benefits.
Last week Talen energy, the owner of the Susquehanna nuclear power plant at Salem, came up with the announcement of the plans to develop a digital infrastructure campus. It will be built next to a power plant.
VP and Division CEO Talent Cumulus and Susquehanna Data Center Dustin Wertheimer said that “Amazon, Google, all those cloud computing applications. Those are the potential clients, customers that we will have in the data center buildings. On the coin mining side, there will be computers again located in those buildings, and those computers will run computations that will trigger and generate the issuance of coins.”
Bitcoin uses the technique of crypto to control the creation of its monetary units. At the same time, it verifies the transferring of all funds. This process is named bitcoin mining which uses a sophisticated range of computers.
Talen Energy says that their joint venture with Terwulf, a bitcoin mining company, is about to invest nearly 400 million into phase 1 for this operation.
“Data center operators are looking for power that’s low cost, that’s highly reliable, and that’s carbon-free. Connecting to our nuclear power plant gives them all three,” stated Wertheimer.
But what will it offer to Salem Township? Some say nothing much. The township is in a kind of negotiation with Talen over the host of its agreement. Supervisors are discussing their offer to pay the township 25 thousand a year. Supervisors are considering a counter-offer with 250 thousand instead.
They have also realized that they need more information for the project profit, which is much higher than they thought. They are talking about a billion-dollar project which will include more than a million soiree feet of the building. They have to help the community in some ways.
All this new information is coming under the spotlight. It is putting a change on some of the things that need to happen at this place. The facility is expected to start its journey in mid- 2022. The township has only granted permission for the site work. The township is reviewing the project for its final approval.
