The British police on Tuesday came up with an announcement that they have seized a record of £180 million of cryptocurrency. It is suspected of having been used for various criminal activities.
The largest-ever haul of the country was made a part of an ongoing investigation for international money laundering and used intelligence. It received information about the transfer of criminal assets as per the police.
They also believe that it is linked with the previous record criminal haul of cryptocurrency, which just took place in the last month.
Less than a month ago, they seized £114 million of cryptocurrency, as the Metropolitan Police Detective, Joe Ryan, said in a statement.
Their investigation since then has been quite complex and wide-ranging. They have worked very hard to trace all the money and identify the criminality with which it may be linked to.
Here is what he exactly said:
“Our investigation since then has been complex and wide-ranging. We have worked hard to trace this money and identify the criminality it may be linked to.”
A 39 years old woman was arrested on June 24 on suspicion of money laundering offenses after the seizure of last month. She has been released without bail.
The same woman has been interviewed under caution related to the seizure of £180 million on July 10.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Graham McNulty, said,
“While cash still remains king in the criminal world, as digital platforms develop we’re increasingly seeing organised criminals using cryptocurrency to launder their dirty money.”
Some years ago, it was just uncharted territory. But now, they have highly trained officers and specialist units that work hard in this space to remain one step forward from criminals. This has helped the country to seize such a larger amount of crypto.
